About the Site
Background
GHI is the culmination of a number of years good practice in convergence of resources and co-operation between health information providers in Glasgow. Since 1992, the Glasgow Health Information Group has acted as a focus for cross-sectoral information sharing on a voluntary basis, drawing together health information providers from the NHS, Higher Education, City Council and Voluntary sectors. In 1996 this group pioneered a new website, the forerunner of this site, providing access to high quality information resources freely available over the Internet.
In 2000, the Glasgow NHS libraries unified their journal and database subscriptions, allowing all NHS Glasgow staff to have access on an equitable basis to the same suites of bibliographic databases, electronic books and journals across the city. These resources were made available to all NHS Glasgow staff via the NHS Glasgow e-Library in June 2001.
This site aims to extend this unified approach by provision of a single access point to learning and information Internet resources, both subscription-based and free. A proposal for Learning Together funding from the Scottish Executive was put forward on behalf of the Glasgow Health Information Group to develop the current website, to be managed by a team based within Greater Glasgow NHS Board. The current site has been built using the former GHI site's dataset of web links, which had been subsequently developed and updated for the North Glasgow Trust website. This dataset has provided the current site with a solid foundation on which to build and develop.
